Formula Electric @ Berkeley (FEB)

UC Berkeley Formula SAE EV Team

2021 Car - (Spring 2020 - Spring 2021)

As part of FEB's braking sub-team, I worked on developing the hybrid (regenerative-hydraulic braking) pedal box, the hydraulic feed system, the MATLAB braking simulations/calculations GUI, and the brake rotor & caliper assembly. I was involved in the entire design process for the braking system which included: 1) the conceptual sketches and first principles for a braking system; 2) the vehicle dynamics and hydraulic pressure calculations to determine my design parameters; 3) selecting COTS components such as the master cylinders, balance bars, pressure transducers, fasteners, and encoders; 4) 3D-modeling the various components of the pedal box such as the pedals, base plate, and encoder mounts in Solidworks; 5) running FEA's and Topology Optimization simulations to minimize the stress concentrations and overall weight; 6) determining the manufacturing plan and testing process for the braking system. Furthermore, I also aided in the development of the brake rotors, integration of the rotor and caliper with the upright and wheel assembly, and general thermal analysis/simulation of the brake system.
